19 Outdated Beliefs Older People Still Cling To

Written By Dave Spencer

Society has evolved, but not everyone has moved on from what it was decades ago. Older adults, in particular, still hold beliefs rooted in tradition, some good and many bad. Today, we’d love to share 19 of these that are most commonly held onto.

Marriage Is a Must for a Fulfilling Life

A JSTOR paper shares that many older adults consider their marriages even more satisfactory than they were years ago. So, it’s no surprise that many of them believe that you need to be in one to have a truly fulfilling life. They overlook that many find happiness outside marriage, getting fulfillment from within themselves.

Men Should Be the Breadwinners

It’s no surprise that some still hold the idea that men should always be the breadwinners. This traditional view disregards the growing trend of shared financial responsibilities and the success of many women as primary earners. It also doesn’t consider that men who single-handedly take on roles as breadwinners are exposed to more health risks today.

College Is the Only Path to Success

Many older people don’t realize that the belief in college as the only path to success is outdated. With the rise of vocational training, online education, and entrepreneurship, even experts from universities agree that there are now multiple routes to a successful career. Recognizing diverse educational paths can help more younger people achieve their goals.

Respect for Authority Is Absolute

We often see older adults uphold the belief that everyone should respect authority, no matter what. Yes, respect is important, but strictly abiding by this only means we fail to think critically and question authority—we fail to take the steps that are important to protect our rights, exercise social justice, and ensure society’s progress.

Technology Is Just a Fad

Many older adults believe that technology is never here to stay, and this belief strengthens with newer technological innovations. For instance, we see this happen with AI today, where 64% of older adults above 50 still see it as a fad despite its breakthrough applications in many sectors of work and society in general.

Women Should Stay Home

Some older generations still believe women should stay home. However, this outdated view neglects women’s value and contributions in the workforce. Modern society celebrates gender equality, with women thriving in various professional fields, effectively rendering this belief obsolete.

Tattoos Are Unprofessional

It’s often said that tattoos are unprofessional, a belief still held by many older people. However, there is no doubt that this view fails to consider the changing norms in the workplace, where tattoos are increasingly accepted. Personal expression through body art is becoming more mainstream, challenging this outdated stereotype.

Physical Punishment Is Necessary for Discipline

It turns out, sadly, that some older generations still believe physical punishment is necessary for discipline. Modern parenting and educational research advocate for positive reinforcement and non-violent discipline methods. These contemporary approaches foster healthier relationships and more effective behavior management, as opposed to harsh punishments that only lead to physical and psychological trauma.

Mental Health Issues Are a Sign of Weakness

You may be surprised to find out that mental health issues being seen as a sign of weakness is still common, and, of course, this is largely within older generations. This is opposed to the modern understanding that emphasizes mental health as crucial to overall well-being—encouraging open discussions and seeking necessary treatment while at it.

LGBTQ+ Identities Are Just Phases

You may be aware that some older individuals also view LGBTQ+ identities as mere phases. Such outdated beliefs invalidate the genuine experiences and identities of LGBTQ+ people. And they don’t see how the acceptance and understanding of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities are essential for an inclusive society.

Women Should Dress Modestly

Think about the last time you heard the opinion that women should always dress modestly. There’s a high chance that this probably came from an older adult.  Today, fashion is about individuality and confidence, not adhering to outdated norms. However, many still want to impose restrictive standards on women’s attire and overlook the importance of personal choice and expression.

Retirement Means the End of Productivity

Retirement can be a new beginning rather than an end. But interestingly enough, the notion that retirement marks the end of productivity still lingers among older adults. This is despite the fact that this notion negatively affects them the most. We all clearly see how many retirees lead active, fulfilling lives, contributing to their communities through volunteer work, hobbies, and part-time jobs.

Single Parenting Is Detrimental to Children

There’s a reason why the belief that single parenting is detrimental to children, which older adults still hold on to, is outdated. Research shows that children can thrive in various family structures when they receive appropriate love and support. Single parents often raise well-adjusted, successful children, debunking this outdated notion.

Traditional Gender Roles Are Best

It’s a shame that some older individuals still see traditional gender roles as the best way to share responsibilities. They fail to see how this limits opportunities and personal growth for both men and women and how embracing flexible roles and equality leads to more balanced and fulfilling lives for everyone.

Immigrants Take Jobs Away

Have you ever heard that immigrants take jobs away from native citizens? Well, many older adults look at the immigration scene in this light while ignoring the economic contributions immigrants make through entrepreneurship, innovation, and filling essential roles. As opposed to what they may want you to believe, immigrants have been seen to drive economic growth positively and enrich cultural diversity.

Alternative Medicine Is Ineffective

Interestingly, many older people still hold the belief that alternative medicine is ineffective and has no place in personal healthcare. While not all alternative treatments are scientifically proven, many, like acupuncture and herbal remedies, offer benefits. Integrating alternative and conventional medicine can provide comprehensive healthcare, especially considering how expensive the latter can get.

The Internet Is Dangerous

Also, for a long time, some members of the older generations have believed that the internet inherently does more harm than good to society. While there are cyber risks to be wary of, the internet also offers immense benefits in information access, communication, and learning. Understanding and navigating online spaces safely can enhance quality of life and connectivity.

Only Certain Jobs Are Respectable

Another opinion that’s far disconnected from the realities of modern society, held among older adults, is that only certain jobs, especially in STEM fields, are respectable. Of course, today, every job, whether it be skilled trades or creative arts, contributes to society and should be valued. Recognizing the dignity of all work promotes a more inclusive and appreciative society.

Boys Will Be Boys

It’s also fascinating, albeit negatively, how the phrase “boys will be boys” is still used to excuse certain behaviors. This old-generation belief perpetuates gender stereotypes and excuses inappropriate conduct when they could foster a healthier, more respectful community by encouraging accountability and respectful behavior in all individuals instead.
