19 Things That Instantly Annoy Older Men

Written By Lisa Marley

Certain behaviors and trends rub older men the wrong way. And the older they get, the more annoying these tend to be. We’ve compiled 19 of these things that are most likely to get under their skin.

Loud Music

Whether in public places like restaurants or private areas like your home, having loud music blasting can easily irritate older men around you. It’s easy to see why, too. According to the Hearing Health Center of Houston, older adults are more sensitive to sound and, so, have a lower threshold for what constitutes ‘noise’ than younger people.

Constant Phone Notifications

Older men also find being met with a barrage of phone notifications annoying. The constant inflow of new updates is usually overwhelming, and it’s particularly irritating when it disrupts periods of concentration. What makes it even worse is if they’re engaged in important meetings or activities when these minimal (and mostly unnecessary) interruptions occur.

Social Media Overuse

Constant social media use annoys older men who value face-to-face interactions. This aggravation is typically more intense when social media use continues in public spaces, like bars or public transport. Older men typically view excessive phone use as distracting, and some even see it as disrespectful sometimes.

Unsolicited Advice

Unsolicited advice can be irritating to older men, and it’s even more annoying when they receive it from younger adults. They may feel this way because they think no advice beats their level of expertise. It can also bring up feelings of shame or being judged.

Overcrowded Spaces

It’s more difficult for older adults to navigate areas with crowds, which explains why crowded places can be very overwhelming for older men as well. Whether in public transportation or shopping centers, it’s even worse when their personal space is invaded or their movement is restricted.

Disrespectful Behavior

Respect is a cornerstone for older men who grew up valuing manners and social norms. They are easily annoyed by rude or disrespectful behavior, whether it’s a lack of manners or disregard for etiquette. This irritation almost always extends to younger generations, who may seem less courteous or aware of traditional customs.

Poor Customer Service

Customer service that is inattentive or rude frustrates older men, who expect politeness and efficiency. They value good service, especially after spending their hard-earned money. This dissatisfaction is often expressed through complaints or by choosing to take their business elsewhere, where they feel more appreciated.

Slow Internet Speeds

In an age where technology is prevalent, slow internet speeds can be a major irritant, too. Older men appreciate efficiency and the ability to access information quickly without lagging. This annoyance can be particularly pronounced during important tasks, like video calls, or when streaming their favorite entertainment.

Overly Complex Technology

Complicated gadgets and software can quickly frustrate older men, who prefer straightforward, user-friendly technology. Devices requiring a steep learning curve or overly complicated instructions aren’t the best fit. Their annoyance often leads to calls for simpler designs and clearer, more intuitive instructions in manuals.

Long Wait Times

Waiting for long periods of time, whether at the doctor’s office or in line at the grocery store, isn’t what older men want to find themselves doing. They value their time and expect services to be prompt and efficient. With this irritation, you may see them seeking out more efficient alternatives or expressing their frustration to management.

Unkept Public Spaces

Older men are also often annoyed by poorly maintained public spaces, such as parks or sidewalks. This is especially true for those who appreciate cleanliness and order and see litter or poorly maintained facilities as eyesores. Sometimes, this irritation comes from their desire for communal respect and traditional responsibility towards shared spaces.

Inconsiderate Drivers

Driving in an area where inconsiderate behavior is rampant can also annoy older men greatly. Aggressive driving, cutting off others, or not following traffic rules are common actions with which they have grievances. And we also see this irritation compounded during rush hour or in heavy traffic, where patience is already thin, leading to higher stress levels for them.

Unreliable Products

Older men expect reliability and quality from their purchases, particularly after they’ve done extensive research. So, purchasing products that don’t work as advertised can be a major annoyance. This frustration is often directed at manufacturers and, most of the time will only force them to go for more trusted (sometimes even unknown) brands with which they’ve had good experiences.

Excessive Commercials

Television and online streaming services filled with too many commercials can irritate older men, decreasing the quality of their viewing experience. They prefer uninterrupted entertainment and find frequent ads disruptive and annoying, and the frustration from this often leads to seeking ad-free alternatives or paying for premium services.

Political Correctness

Older men see the emphasis on political correctness as too woke. They often feel restricted in their ability to speak freely and express their opinions, stemming from a perception that their language and viewpoints are being unnecessarily censored or judged harshly by others.

Lack of Personal Space

Older men highly value personal space, and its violation can cause them great discomfort. They appreciate respectful distance in social and public settings and feel disturbed when others get too close. This annoyance is heightened in close-quarter situations in public areas, where boundaries are often ignored.

Inconsistent Pricing

Finding different prices for the same item can frustrate older men who expect fair and consistent pricing. They feel cheated when prices vary significantly between stores or online platforms. With this feeling, you find them shopping for longer than they’d like or strictly avoiding businesses perceived as inconsistent or unreliable.

Automated Customer Service

Interacting with automated customer service systems is often annoying for older men, as they grew up speaking to a human representative who can address their issues directly and efficiently. This frustration is particularly worsened when the system fails to resolve their problems quickly, forcing them to frustratingly make repeated attempts at solving simple issues.

Graffiti and Vandalism

Graffiti and vandalism in the community can also push older men to the edge. They value respect for property and view these acts as signs of societal decay and disrespect. Due to this, we typically see many of them call for increased community efforts, surveillance, or initiatives to maintain and clean public spaces.
