18 Things We All Secretly Do in Hotels (But Not at Home)

Written By Lisa Marley

Hotels are one of the best things about traveling. They’re safe spaces to get ready, relax, refresh, and sleep when visiting an unfamiliar place. They make us feel comfortable—in fact, so comfortable that we do these things that we typically wouldn’t do at home.

Jump On The Bed

Jumping on your own bed would seem strange, but it’s one of the best things we all secretly do in hotels! There’s a greater sense of freedom and privacy in a hotel that makes the bed seem like a trampoline. It’s also a fun way to test the comfort and springiness of the mattress.

Take Multiple Showers

Taking multiple showers per day at home would be insanity with the rising cost of water bills. However, you don’t have to worry about that in a hotel, so you’re free to shower as often as you like. You can also take advantage of better shower settings that you might not have at home.

Eat More Than One Breakfast

Hotels deserve praise for their unlimited breakfasts. According to Bon Appétit, they’re a great way to get to know the local food culture of the place you’re visiting, so you should eat your fill! Many people barely eat breakfast at home but can’t resist multiple morning meals in a hotel.

Watch TV All Day

We’d all love to relax at home and watch TV all day, but work, family obligations, chores, and social commitments make it impossible. That’s why so many people enjoy staying inside their hotel rooms to channel surf and catch up on new shows and movies. It’s a great way to mentally unwind.

Walk Around Without Clothes

Many people hesitate to walk around without clothes in their homes because they’re paranoid about being seen. However, this worry disappears in hotel rooms because they seem much more private. That’s why walking around without clothes on is a strange but prevalent thing to do.

Eat Dinner in Bed

Almost nobody eats in their own bed. It’s messy and needlessly complicated, and you’ll have to get out of bed afterward to do the dishes. But in a hotel, you can order room service right to your door and then enjoy it from the comfort of your bed, knowing you won’t need to get out.

Use Fresh Towels Every Day

While you should change your towels frequently, nobody uses a fresh one every day because it would cost too much to wash and dry them all. Hotels allow you to request fresh towels each day, so you can take a relaxing shower or bath and then wrap up in a clean towel.

Use Plenty of Air-Con

Air Conditioning is a hotel room necessity. ACR Journal reports that not having Air-Con negatively impacts guest satisfaction, which tells you how frequently people use it. We wouldn’t leave the AC running at home due to costs, but that’s not an issue in hotels. The result is a much cooler and comfortable room.

Sleep in For Hours

Hotels offer guests a ‘do not disturb’ sign to hang outside their rooms, and we all use them! You’re less likely to sleep in for hours at home because of your job or children, but you don’t need to follow a morning routine in a hotel. You can sleep in and wake up slowly.

Run Down the Hallway

There’s something about hotels that inspires childlike excitement in all of us. Jumping on the bed and running down the hallway becomes entertaining, which we’d never do at home because it would be weird. Long hotel hallways are nothing special, but they provide plenty of amusement.

Refuse to Hang Up Clothes

Putting laundry away is one of the most mundane household chores, but it must be done at home. However, in hotels, there’s no need to hang up clothes when you can live out of a suitcase. This seems lazy, but it feels so liberating when you’re not in your house.

Eat Snacks Any Time of the Day

Many people think snacking between meals is bad, but there are no rules in hotels! Most of them have vending machines, so you can pop downstairs and pick up some treats no matter the time. There’s no judgment in the privacy of your own room, so you can indulge to your heart’s content.

Crank Up the Thermostat

We rarely crank up the thermostat at home because, like Air-Con, central heating also costs an obscene amount of money. But hotels can afford to heat all the rooms well. Take advantage of this when traveling to colder places to stay cozy in your room.

Drink Too Many Cups of Coffee

Most people enjoy coffee regularly, but we tend to drink a lot more in hotels than at home. According to New Ground Magazine, hotel coffee is gaining a better reputation thanks to the introduction of specialty coffee and signature blends, which is why we often drink far too many cups of it.

Not Take Out the Trash

Taking out the trash is another tedious chore we all have to do at home to keep things clean. However, there’s no shame in not taking out the trash in hotels, so we rarely do it. As long as you put things inside the trash can, the room stays clean.

Leave the Bathroom Door Open

There’s nothing more annoying than having your siblings or roommates disturb you while you’re using the bathroom, so hotel rooms are a dream. That’s why we all secretly leave the bathroom door open in hotels when using the toilet or shower; we know we’re in private.

Sleep with Extra Pillows

Sometimes, one pillow isn’t enough, but having lots of pillows on your small bed at home would be strange. Most hotel rooms have double or even king-sized beds, so there are plenty of pillows to choose from. And there’s nobody around to judge you for sleeping on all of them!

Look For Secret Cameras

We know our homes well, but hotels are unfamiliar places, so we all secretly search for hidden cameras. CNBC warns that spycams could be concealed in alarm clocks, air fresheners, and toothbrush holders, so checking the entire room is necessary. Once you’re satisfied there are no hidden cameras, you can enjoy your stay.
